BP Coker - Marktown, IN

Built in 2013, the new coker unit pictured here was added to the massive British Petroleum refinery to process Canadian Tar Sands, some of the dirtiest and most resource intensive crude to refine. The coker splits the molecules of hydrocarbon into shorter chains to rid them of excess carbon, creating petroleum coke, a hazardous byproduct which is shipped overseas, primarily to India, where it is burned as fuel. Petroleum is the key ingredient in plastic.
